Originally, this picture was supposed to be totally different. L had a slightly shocked expression, and was supposed to be being confronted by an angry B... but I just couldn't draw B the way I wanted him! :cries: I liked L though, so I tried to think of what else he could be looking at and I started thinking of conversations I've had with :iconchikaradesu: and :iconfreyamihara911: about L and his... difficult personality, and about appreciating nature etc., and then I started wondering whether L would take the time to appreciate the world around him. On the one hand, he seems disinterested by his surroundings a lot of the time, and he doesn't seem to have much respect for objects (he writes on a table in a hotel room in marker pen...), but then there are scenes in the anime and the manga where he just stares out across the city - like the infamous rain scene. ...Basically, I wanted to draw L in a tranquil moment, taking in the beauty of nature. You know, seeing as I couldn't threaten him with a murderous ex-resident of Wammy's! :XD:

...That was a needlessly long artist's comment, wasn't it? :D

Yay! I'm so glad you mentioned the grass - I wanted to use the grass effect brush as little as possible, so I tried to create the effect myself... I used the grass brush for the 'edges' - where it overlaps L's feet and bum and where it meets the sky, but otherwise... I have abstained from the nasty cheating brush! :D
If L's anything like me and that butterfly does land on his nose, he'll freak out! Aaagh! Flying insect! I like butterflies and all, but... they FLAP ABOUT so much! *shudder*

Basically no one could really understand L. I think the creators also decided to leave himself shrouded in mystery, never wanted to reveal much about him....because that's what he is : ) The mysterious guy.
I love this~ His expression is :heart:! Of course, I guess L does want to just take a break and enjoy nature. Though I don't think the butterfly will like him.....XD <3

Yeah - I'm loving talking to you and the other awesome people I've met on DA about Death Note and stuff! :heart: And this was kind of inspired by that conversation we had about L being totally the wrong person to get involved with - I guess I wanted to make him a bit more human!

I agree that it's practically impossible to truly understand L. There are a few hints at what kind of person he is, but then he lies so much, it's difficult to tell if it's true... And nothing solid is ever really revealed about his past, which is great!

Thanks so much for the comment - I'm glad you like it! :D I'm really proud of his expression too - he's SMILING, for once! :aww: He doesn't do that often...
